CarlHammondFebruary 5th, 2026- The City of Fenton has lost one of its most active and dedicated civil servants. Carl Hammond, City Council member of 27 years, serving as Mayor from 1985-1989, passed away at the age of 91 on January 31st, 2026. His contributions to The City of Fenton didn’t end after his consecutive terms standing on City Council. Hammond was also an active member of The Board of Review and Chairperson of the Zoning Board of Appeals until 2021.

Hammond was an irreplaceable member of the Fenton community and is remembered for his professionalism and ability to guide those around him towards success. During his two terms as Mayor, Hammond navigated a split council with grace and stabilized the city government. He was a mentor to countless members of the community and was recognized by several of them with heart-felt speeches during his last council meeting in 2009.

Known for being the biggest Detroit Tiger’s fan in the city, Hammond was gifted a Detroit Tiger’s jacket by the city’s attorney, Stephen Schultz during his final meeting as a council member. That jacket made its way to Comerica Park in 2016, where Hammond was honored by throwing the first pitch of a game on April 22nd
