Parks & Recreation
Southern Lakes Parks and Recreation celebrated 10 years of serving the community in 2010!
The Southern Lakes Regional Parks and Recreation District (SLPR) is a collaborative effort between the City of Fenton, Fenton Township, and the City of Linden bringing a multitude of cultural and recreational opportunities, leisure classes, and events to residents of all 3 communities. The model developed to allow funding and operations for the SLPR is said to be the first of its kind in the State of Michigan.
Housed in the historic Fenton Community and Cultural Center designed by Gottlieb Eliel Saarinen and his son, Eero Saarinen, SLPR organizes the Farmer's Market, and works cooperatively with the Fenton Regional Chamber of Commerce to partner in Jinglefest, Taste of Fenton, and other community events.
Dauner Martin Nature Preserve
A favorite for locals and folks from miles around is the Dauner Martin Nature Preserve: 155 acres of wilderness in the city of Fenton!
"In 1998 Robert J. Martin and sister, Marion T. Martin, long-time residents of Fenton, deeded their land to the Michigan Nature Association. Robert Martin said he didn't want to see the farmland and woods, which once belonged to his grandparents, disturbed from here on. Through the years, he had planted thousands of small pines as a reforestation project. Some are now older than 50 years. Other species such as oak, elm, cherry, maple, and ash are also prevalent on the property. Please come out for a visit and enjoy the sanctuary. Don't forget your camera and binoculars."
-As described in the Dauner Martin Nature Preserve Website home page
