The City of Fenton is one of the few cities within Genesse County that supplies its own water to its residents. The city has four wells it pumps water for our residents. They are located near our new water treatment facility on North Road. Three of these wells have been use since 1956 and one was put into service in 2002. The City pumps approximately 380 milllion gallons of water per year. Our new Water Treatment Facility is a lime softening plant built in 2003 and is one of a kind in the State of Michigan. It not only softens our water but has eliminated the Iron and Arsenic out it. Although some people think our old water taste better than the new, we think our new system will work very well for the City for the next twenty years.

The City also has 4 full time men in the distribution section of our Water system and 5 full time operators in our water treatment plant. These individuals read meters, repair water main breaks, do work orders that come in through of Water Department line, and install new water lines when requested. The plant operators work an 18 hour day to keep the water flowing to our customers. Tours of our new treatment plant can be arranged by calling 629-2261 and asking for Mr. Leslie P. Bland, Director of Public Works.

*****If you are experiencing discolored water, please call the Water Department at 629-6347 and talk to our Water Billing Clerk Shang Shukri, she will ask you to answer a few questions so we can document the complaint on a form we have set up to help us tell where a problem may be within the city.

Please call Shang Shukri who is available to answer questions on your bills, set up repair appointments, and give general information about our water system.

2007 Water Sample Violation (Arsenic)

One of the ways that the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) and the State of Michigan ensure a high quality of drinking water is to hold providers, usually municipalities, to a very high standard.  In addition to other requirements the standards regulate the testing and reporting of water quality.  Every year a water quality report is sent to our customers and provides a snap shot of the quality of water they receive.  During the fourth quarter of 2007 the City of Fenton Water Plant missed a required water test.  A test sample was required to be taken for arsenic during that quarter and was not.

The “process of precipitation softening” that is used by the City of Fenton Water Plant removes heavy metals such as Arsenic and others from the water.  This process, which eliminates unwanted elements, was not altered or affected during the time in question.  The plant was operated no differently in the last quarter of 2007 than it was in the previous quarters since the start up of the new plant.  All 13 of the previous quarters have resulted in a “Non-detect” for Arsenic as well as the one required test since that time.

As the Operator-in-charge it is my duty to make sure that the monitoring schedule is completed, it is not a normal duty of the daily operators.  Although I was absent I failed to delegate this responsibility.  I take full responsibility for the missed sample.

Following is the Water Quality Report for the calendar year 2007.  Also attached is a copy of the Tier III violation.  This report will be mailed out in the next month.  Any questions should be directed to Stephen Guy at (810) 714-0528 and leave a message if there is no answer.
