1. Wellhead Protection Program
The City of Fenton's Wellhead Protection Program Plan (WHPP) is designed to (1) provide safe drinking water to the public, and (2) protect drinking water from potential sources of contamination.
The City of Fenton obtains its drinking water from 4 wells that pump water from sand and gravel deposits between 32 and 100 feet beneath the City. This water is pumped to the new water treatment facility on North Road, and then is routed to water supply lines that lead to most homes and businesses within the City.
2. How Can You Help Protect Your Drinking Water?
Once ground water becomes contaminated, it can be very difficult, costly, and in some cases impossible to clean up. Preventing ground-water contamination is the most effective way to protect your drinking water resources. The City realizes that it cannot control every land user in its Wellhead Protection Area, so here are some ways that you can help protect your drinking water and the drinking water that will be used by many generations to come.
- Locate and properly plug unused and abandoned wells.
- Properly dispose of household hazardous waste.
- Properly maintain your septic system.
- Consider alternatives to household products that contain hazardous materials.
- Follow instructions when using fertilizers and pesticides.
- Inspect aboveground and underground storage tanks for leaks.

- Misuse of herbicides and pesticides.
- Failing septic systems and improper septic design.
- Byproducts from oil and gas well drilling activities.
